Small New Year's Update.

I haven't been up to nothing. Lots of goodies coming up! In the meantime go check out my review for The Frogiveness of Blood over at PopMatters.

Also, follow this link to sign up for Film Riot over at Ology!
I'll be hosting an event there quite soon and you're all invited to participate, the movie talks are quite interesting over there.

In the meantime, to apologize for my constant absence, I give you what I've decided is the greatest photograph of all time:

Fiddle-dee-dee!

Ugh, I feel like I haven't seen Pé in a movie screen in ages. Actually I might not have, considering Nine never officially played in theaters here...oh wait, well yes. she did have that tiny cameo in Sex and the City 2 but you know what I mean. Anyhoo, doesn't she look breathtaking in this production still of Nero Fiddled?
Don't we all wish she'll join Dianne Wiest and win two Oscars for Woody movies? (If you don't, say yes anyway).

My Letter to the Editor.

Today unintentionally became Madonna day at the blog and I apologize if it seems like a bit "too much" (fanboy to death!) but on my way home, I was reading The New Yorker and ran into Anthony Lane's review for W.E.
To say I almost puked is an understatement, Mr. Lane's review was not only irresponsible, it also proved that men who have a problem with women in power take it out on them in any way they can.

I arrived home completely incensed and wrote the following letter to the editor:

"I was appalled to read Anthony Lane's chauvinistic review for Madonna's W.E. in which he makes it clear that he let his hormones and narrow mindedness get the best of him. Not only is the review itself an attack of its director as opposed to a smart deconstruction of the movie, but when Lane writes "what on Earth is the point of a Madonna product, in any medium, if it contains not a single orgy?", he makes it quite clear that not only is he unfamiliar with Madonna's work - he really should listen to her protest album "American Life" or the way she removes sex out of the equation in "Erotica" - Mr. Lane also makes it quite clear that he dislikes Madonna because he couldn't contain the sheer power of her artistic persona in his masturbatory fantasies."

Can you believe anyone would say that about an artist? Would Mr Lane suggest that Picasso's works were only limited to painting whores or that Truffaut only made movies about children? By reducing an artist to a stereotype of one of their many aspects isn's only disrespectful, it's utterly lazy as well. However Mr. Lane would probably never make such a comment if he were talking about David Lynch, Martin Scorsese or Terrence Malick, who despite being masters of the form, often revisit the same themes over and over. This reductive review truly made me sick, although what can you expect of someone who thought the best part in Albert Nobbs were Janet McTeer's "regal" breasts?

Am I right in being so offended by this sexist approach to Madonna's work? This comes in the light of a superb article posted in The Guardian which states that Madge's work is usually criticized because she plays in the boys' league and they hate it.

Queen of the Style.

Who are we kidding? Madonna's half time show during last night's Super Bowl might be the greatest cinematic spectacle we'll see for at least the first half of 2012. Right? From her inspiring choreography, to her endless list of cinematic and cultural references, the Queen made sure to put on a show nobody would be able to top for years!

Appearing on stage, carried by dozens of semi-naked slave boys (or "boy toys" as she's affectionately called them in the past) Madonna immediately evoked visions of the young Liz Taylor atop a gargantuan carriage in the infamous Cleopatra.

In doing so, the Queen wasn't only paying tribute to one of the most spectacular moments in all of Cinemascope history, she was also saying something about the way in which Taylor, miles ahead of almost any other actress of the Golden Era, was such an empowering feminist figure. A recent article in W Magazine alludes to how Taylor;'s movies singlehandedly dealt with topics that weren't thought of as appropriate in a male-centric world. Themes like abortion, homosexuality and abuse were front of the line in Taylor's movies, however Taylor, like Madonna often had to suffer from prejudices towards her sex and is mostly remembered for her jewelry and marriages.

Wearing a custom made Philip Treacy headdress, Madge combined Egyptian couture with the mightiness of a Nordic goddess.

Never one to deny her love for all that's mainstream and influential, Madonna also paid tribute to some of today's hottest artists including M.I.A, Nicki Minaj, LMFAO, Cee-lo Green - all of whom collaborated with her onstage- as well as indirectly paying tribute to others whom she loves and admires like Kylie Minogue and everyone she mentions in the famous "Vogue" rap.

Kylie during her "Aphrodite: Les Folies Tour" which had her don the pose of the title Greek goddess.

Her performance of "Vogue" in particular was such a landmark among her live performances because she incorporated all the elements that make her such a timeless artist.

Madge has always been a pastiche artist and in this particular performance she delivered a hybrid that combined sword and sandals epic-ness (the swoosh and clink sounds included with the song's astonishing brass sections were orgasmic), love for classic movie stars and style (that she used Vogue magazine's instantly recognizable logo was a thing of pure genius!) and most remarkable of all is her fearlessness when it comes to technology. The way she incorporate the visuals on the football field was a work of art.

When it came to fashion, Madge went with Givenchy once more, who created a series of simple looks for her that worked like instant costume changes with minimum work (Madge showing you can be a mythical goddess and also a practical accesorizer was prcieless!).

Givenchy head designer Ricardo Tischi seems to have had a blast designing the pieces for Madge, who seamlessly moved between four different "settings", merely by removing or adding pieces. Now how's that for economical storytelling?

Did you enjoy the Queen as much as I did? What did you think of the way she threw all those pop culture references around?

The Meryl's Double.

I love Jennifer Ehle and have for a few years now. I believe her subtly romantic turn in Possession was award worthy (the whole movie was quite underrated truth be told) and I was pleasantly surprised when she pretty much gave the best performance in Contagion
During the movie we are told that humans touch their faces up to 3 thousand times a day. The very idea of having hands all over one's face has always reminded me of one person: Meryl Streep.
The divine Streep is always taking her hands to her face, usually when she gasps, laughs or does something which reminds us of her godliness. It's as if concealing a part of her face will contain all the nuclear power coming out of her magnificence. I obviously immediately linked Ehle to Streep and given how alike they look, I wanted to share this with you all:

Creepy, no?

Do you think Ehle has what it takes to reach Streep-ian levels of perfection?

Start Spreading the News...

As of today the blog will enter a short hiatus (it's not as if I've written much lately anyway...) as I will be in my favorite city on Earth, pretending I'm Holly Golightly.
If all goes well I might take in a few movies (Jane Eyre, The Arbor, Meek's Cutoff, Scream 4 and The Beaver I'm looking at you...) and review them.
If not, it's probably because I imploded from the fabulousness exuded by the amazing Kylie Minogue in her concert (main reason of my trip!).
Either way I might break this promise and blog anyway. NYC always inspires me...

What will you all be doing during my absence?

Today I Feel Like

I began grad school today and oh boy, I had no idea the work load would be SO BIG!
I'm taking two courses: Screenwriting and Crime & Violence in American Cinema so let's all hope I get wiser from this.

But enough about me, distract me with something non-work, non-school related please.

Once An Underdog...

Yesterday I went to Amazon.com, I always do...and saw The Social Network was number one in Movie sales. Hours later when the Star Wars trilogy was announced on Blu-ray it kicked down poor Marc Zuckerberg to the second place even if nothing specific was announced, the movies won't be released until the end of the year (Network comes out on Tuesday) and people don't even know if the Blu-rays will have the awful manipulated editions or the awesome classic versions (I won't even mention the prequels).
I wondered what the insecure Zuckerberg would feel knowing this happened but then realized he might be the one behind all those Star Wars pre-orders...

PS: my review for The Social Network will be coming soon but if it makes a difference, I'm one of the ones who pre-ordered it.

Random Design.

I'm not really a fan of this movie but isn't this cover art for the Criterion edition of Topsy-Turvy absolutely fabulous?

Stronger Than Yesterday.

I promise I will try to resume normal posting as soon as possible. With actual work, traffic jams, exhaustion, existential issues and whatnot, I've barely had time to sit and watch a movie lately!
I know...
For now I present you with a still from the upcoming Country Strong, already being touted as the female version of Crazy Heart (which as you know I disliked) I'm excited about it if only because well Gwyneth Paltrow is getting some stellar buzz for it.
I can't wait to see her back in the awards game, considering she's only actually been in it once! Although she should've at least garnered some buzz for The Royal Tenenbaums, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Proof and the vastly underrated Sylvia...
But OK it seems my bias is coming out too strongly at this hour, I better go catch some sleep and write my butt off during the weekend.
Seen any good movies while I've been AWOL?

How Come?

I always had the strange idea that Paul Muni was German?
Whatever his nationality, he's phenomenal in I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang isn't he?

Emasculate Me.

Remember all those movies about either men or women disappearing and causing havoc in terms of population and reproductive matters?
Well, according to recent studies everything we saw in dystopian sci-fi might not be a far fetched conjecture created by geeky writers.
With the imminent end of the Y chromosome, will there come a time when the planet will only be populated by women?
As we know, men are becoming more dispensable in terms of reproduction-with stem cells, in vitro, stored sperm and whatnot- but how will a world without men turn out to be?
This "imminent" event might be million of years away from occurring-if it even happens-but it certainly gets the mind rolling.
Can you imagine when at the 1,000,000th Academy Awards there are only categories for Actresses?

Tragedy.

Read this great, albeit sad, article on the disappearance of classic movies on DVD.
Today on the way to work I was wondering if I should double dip on the upcoming versions of "Gone With the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz", now seems I should if only to support classics on DVD...

Just Random...

I just woke up from a dream in which Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu presented an Honorary Academy Award to Judi Dench...
